In the middle of a garden of herbs in a vacant lot, white women’s nightgowns showing traces of violence are visible –, buried underground beneath a sheet of glass. The spectator, however, initially perceives only the garden surrounding the public artwork; the spectator’s position oscillates between that of the distant observer and the participant, and they must decide between the two. In the space of the memorial, the spectator becomes a witness – there is no evocation without immersion.
